I am Patrick Eisermann – as a spice sommelier…
I believe in what tastes good and connects people. I used to be a management consultant. Suits, airports, full calendars. Everything was going well. And yet there was this emptiness. Exciting projects, great opportunities – and yet the feeling: That can’t be all there is.
What I was missing was a connection, especially to nature. So, in 2018, I quit my job and founded roots. Back then, I didn’t have a master plan, but I already had a clear conviction: I want to know where what we eat comes from. And I want to source every spice directly from there – working together respectfully with local partners who maintain the highest standards of quality.
Since then, there have been fewer Excel spreadsheets and more conversations with vanilla farmers in Indonesia, explorations for exotic pepper varieties in Nepal, and exclusive cinnamon varieties like those from the island of Pemba. I quickly realized:
If you really want to understand what is in a spice, you shouldn’t look at the price first.
roots. isn’t a trading company. It’s a mindset. We source directly – without middlemen, without compromise. Our focus is on genuine contact with the people. They have a much closer connection to nature and also know when the rain is coming.
“For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude.”
– 1 Timothy 4:4
These sentences stay with me. Not as a mission, but as a reminder: Creation is precious.
Food not only nourishes us—it supports connection and strengthens our bonds with others. And good taste begins in the roots: in the soil, continues into the plant, and connects with us humans.
I don’t believe in perfection. But I do believe in development—and in the quality that comes from trusting in divine intelligence. This is followed by the combination of natural spices and ingredients for an authentic, delicious meal. I love discovering new flavors, cooking, and asking: What is possible—when we once again know where something comes from and what connects us?
roots. is a family business.
We – that’s Mai, our three children, family, friends, acquaintances, and I – live with and for what we do.
We produce everything ourselves, fresh, in small batches. There are no industrial processes involved, but true craftsmanship – with dedication and attention to detail.
I know the people we source our spices from personally. Consequently, there are no middlemen and no anonymous supply chains. We speak directly, listen, and build relationships. Not because it’s easy to market—but because it’s the only way we want to work, and probably can.
Today, I’m no longer searching. I’m on the move – together with people who want to rediscover spices.
If you want to experience the power, flavor, and history inherent in authentic nature – come with us.
We’ll show you what’s inside.
